O Herbário VIES comporta em sua grande maioria acervo de famílias de Fanerógamos, mas agrega ainda algumas famílias de Pterydophyta, Fungos, Liquens e Algas. Grande parte deste acervo também refere-se a táxons coletados em ambientes de Restinga (ao redor de 90%), só nos últimos quatro anos houve um incremento de espécies provenientes de Mata Atlântica. Contamos hoje com aproximadamente 15.000 exsicatas que são consultadas por diversos especialistas brasileiros com o objetivo de identificar novas espécies e/ou resolver problemas de identificação. Há pouco intercâmbio no sentido de troca de material com outros herbários pois temos carência de pessoal na equipe (há somente a curadora e 01 técnico pra cuidar de todo o acervo). Também temos problemas com a informatização do mesmo, uma vez que só dispomos de um computador e só recentemente (04 meses) estamos trabalhando com o novo programa para herbário (o Brahms). O público alvo de destino da coleção é basicamente o de todo herbário brasileiro, ou seja, para pesquisadores e estudantes de Pós-graduação que trabalhem nas áreas de taxonomia, fitossociologia, ecologia, etc.
