The SAMES Herbarium - an acronym that corresponds to the city and state of location (São Mateus - Espírito Santo), was officially registered in the Index Herbariorum in 2016, but its creation dates back to 2006, with the internalization of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, with the creation of the University Center of the North of Espírito Santo (CEUNES), in the city of São Mateus. Currently, SAMES has 7,834 vouchers, representative of the sandy coastal dunes environments knows as “Restingas” and the tableland forests of northern Espírito Santo and southern Bahia. The flora of the rocky outcrops of the northwest of Espirito Santo is also documented in this herbarium. In addition to these collections, SAMES has an important collection of plants of agronomic interest, composed by invasive plants of pastures, weeds, toxic and agricultural cultivars that support undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Agronomy.
